Northstage D-ODS SN:02

A refined, hand-built interpretation of the iconic Dumble Overdrive Special, inspired by #183 and developed through detailed analysis, testing, and reconstruction.

This version pairs the complexity and responsiveness of the ODS circuit with a more expressive and distinctive aesthetic, resulting in an instrument that is as striking visually as it is sonically.

Design and construction

This is a fully custom build, from the circuit through to the chassis and cabinet. The chassis was custom fabricated to my requirements and the cabinet is finished in stunning burnt orange suede, paired with classic styling details that nod to the heritage of early high-end American amplifiers.

Valve complement and voicing

While inspired by this EL34-based design, this build runs KT77 output valves. KT77s retain the familiar character of EL34s but provide:

• Slightly more headroom
• Improved clarity at the edge of breakup
• Strong note definition under gain

The result is an amplifier that delivers smooth, articulate overdrive, rich harmonic content, and exceptional touch sensitivity.

Performance

This amp is designed to respond as much to the player as to the controls.

• Clean tones with depth and dimensionality
• Overdrive that is fluid without losing articulation
• Extremely responsive to pick attack and playing dynamics

It is equally at home as a studio instrument or a centrepiece live amplifier.

A unique build

This version, with its burnt orange suede finish, stands apart from the more traditional ODS aesthetic while remaining unmistakably Dumble in voice.

Built as the second amp in a very small batch of two, it represents the same level of craftsmanship, precision, and attention to detail found throughout all Northstage builds.
