Northstage D-ODS SN:01

A hand-built interpretation of the legendary Dumble Overdrive Special, inspired by the highly documented #183 and built with a focus on accuracy, feel, and long-term reliability.

This amplifier is the result of an extensive reverse-engineering process, reconstructing the circuit from original references, photographs, and testing, rather than relying on commonly available schematics. The goal was simple: to create an amp that captures the character, responsiveness, and complexity that define the Overdrive Special.

Design and construction

This is a fully custom build, from the circuit through to the chassis and cabinet. The chassis was custom fabricated to my requirements and the cabinet is finished in black tolex with a Western pattern, paired with classic styling details that nod to the heritage of early high-end American amplifiers. It's a subtle but distinctive finish that suits the understated nature of the amp.

Valve complement and voicing

While inspired by this EL34-based design, this build runs KT77 output valves. KT77s retain the familiar character of EL34s but provide:

• Slightly more headroom
• Improved clarity at the edge of breakup
• Strong note definition under gain

The result is an amplifier that delivers smooth, articulate overdrive, rich harmonic content, and exceptional touch sensitivity.

Performance

This amp is designed to respond as much to the player as to the controls.

• Clean tones with depth and dimensionality
• Overdrive that is fluid without losing articulation
• Extremely responsive to pick attack and playing dynamics

It is equally at home as a studio instrument or a centrepiece live amplifier.

Build ethos

Each stage of the build follows a strict test procedure, bringing the amp to life section by section before final assembly. This ensures stability, reliability, and consistency throughout.

This is not a production amplifier — it is a small-batch, handmade piece, built with the same care and attention as a one-off commission.
